WHO THE RESIDENCY IS FOR

 

The open call is addressed to:

 

– Individual improvisers seeking to develop their practices through sustained experimentation, historical inquiry, critical reflection, and public presentation

– Improvising ensembles interested in collective methodologies, emergent form, distributed agency, and the articulation of ensemble knowledge

– Performer-composers, sound artists, and artist-researchers whose work intersects with improvisation, composition, theory, historiography, writing, curation, technology, philosophy, ecology, or artistic direction

 

The residency welcomes conventional, expanded, experimental, electroacoustic, interdisciplinary, and hybrid practices. It is open to artists working within established improvisational traditions as well as to those whose work challenges the category itself. Applicants should demonstrate that their proposed work can be developed meaningfully through sustained online exchange and an on-site public program.

 

Projects may enter at different stages: as established practices requiring deeper articulation, new performance formats, works in progress, research processes, technological or notational systems, ensemble methodologies, or questions investigated through sound and performance.

 

Participants should be prepared to:

 

– Present and contextualize their artistic practices with precision

– Share performances, recordings, texts, diagrams, technologies, or other working materials

– Engage critically and constructively with the work of others

– Offer and receive specific artistic, methodological, and historical feedback

– Participate in collective listening, analysis, experimentation, and discussion

– Examine the assumptions, limits, and genealogies of their methods

– Remain responsive to the transformation of projects through exchange

– Contribute to a working environment based on attentiveness, reciprocity, and professional responsibility

 

The program is particularly suited to artists who understand improvisation not merely as a genre or performance technique, but as a method capable of producing musical, social, and historical knowledge.
